I’ve always felt strongly that care provided for the elderly is an important measure of a society. As better healthcare leads to more and more people growing to a ripe old age, meeting this obligation is becoming an ever-greater challenge in Malaysian society.
So how do we respond to this challenge?
The first place to look is the family. I am very clear that the biggest
commitment should come from the children of the elderly. Our parents brought us
up with unconditional love and support - it is natural and right that we offer
the same when they need us in their old age.
But whilst the burden of responsibility
for helping the elderly lies with family, the government also has a role.
That’s why last weekend I launched the Caring for Old Folks Awareness Campaign in Negeri Sembilan. At the launch I
spoke not just of the moral responsibility that families have to look after the
elderly, but also outlined some of the steps my government is taking to offer
an additional helping hand.
If we all play our role, I’m confident
our society will continue to offer the level of care that our older generation
deserves.
